We talk a lot about eating well, exercising, and cutting back on screen time; but what about sleep? Despite being one of the most important pillars of health, sleep is often overlooked, rushed, or squeezed in wherever we can find time.
In Australia, more and more people are quietly running on empty. They’re yawning through meetings, hitting a wall mid-afternoon, or waking up feeling like they barely slept at all. But it’s not just about being tired. Sleep plays a vital role in how we learn, age, process information, and maintain our emotional balance.

ToggleSleep Loss in Australia: What the Numbers Tell Us
One in three Australians is not getting enough sleep.
The Sleep Health Foundation found that up to 45% of adults report poor or inadequate sleep at least a few nights a week. That’s nearly half the population showing up to life without proper rest. (Sleep Health Foundation)

Poor sleep is costing more than we think.
It’s not just the grogginess, it’s the long-term health risks. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, chronic sleep deprivation contributes to around 3,000 deaths each year, due to conditions like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and depression. (AIHW, 2021)
Sleep and mental health go hand in hand.
Poor sleep increases your risk of anxiety, depression, and mood disorders. In fact, researchers say people who don’t get enough quality sleep are two to three times more likely to experience psychological distress. It’s harder to stay resilient, regulate emotions, or feel like yourself when you’re running on fumes.

Sleep powers learning and memory.
During sleep, your brain sorts and stores the information you’ve taken in during the day. A good night’s sleep has been shown to improve memory consolidation, focus, creativity, and even decision-making. Without it, your brain is slower to process, and quicker to forget. (Harvard, 2021)
Quality sleep helps slow the effects of aging.
Sleep is when the body repairs itself, including the brain. Chronic poor sleep is linked to accelerated cognitive decline and may increase the risk of developing dementia. Even your skin shows it. Deep sleep helps maintain collagen production, cellular repair, and hormone balance. (National Institute of Aging, US)

Why Aren’t We Sleeping Well?
There’s no one answer. For some, it’s the mental load. For others, it’s shift work, kids, or doom-scrolling past midnight. But research shows that our environment plays a huge role, and that’s something we can actually control.
Exposure to light at night (even streetlights sneaking through curtains) disrupts melatonin production. Noise, fluctuating temperatures, and even the wrong bedding can keep us tossing and turning.
The good news? With a few small tweaks to your sleep space, you can create a sanctuary designed for rest.
